Outer Harbor Shine Gold for Pediatric Cancer Awareness event

August 24, 2015

Cancer continues to be the leading cause of death by disease for children in our country. September marks Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month and the awareness color is gold. With a mission to raise awareness for more research and funding, spotlight the struggles of this diagnosis, and honor those who have been lost to it, several area organizations are joining forces for the second annual “Shine Gold” event on Monday, August 31 from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. at Buffalo’s Outer Harbor.

Created for local families who have been affected by pediatric cancer, the event will feature family activities, a balloon release  and a presence from the following organizations: Camp Good Days & Special Times, Melina’s White Light, the P.U.N.T. Foundation, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Carly’s Club (Roswell Park Cancer Institute), Stone’s Buddies (Women & Children’s Hospital), Kaely’s Kindness Foundation, Mikey’s Way, Essential Care, Bryan Lawrence Foundation, Matthew Foster Foundation, St. Jude’s, APHON, and the family of Anna Rose Leavoy. Local political representatives plan to attend including: Congressman Brian Higgins, Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burnstein, Senator Tim Kennedy, and Mayor Byron Brown. A press conference will occur at 7 p.m. followed by the balloon release.

“Raising awareness is the first step toward making pediatric cancer research and funding a priority so these kids can have a chance at a future,” said Lisa Riniolo, who founded  Melina’s White Light in memory of her daughter who battled neuroblastoma and passed away at age 13  in 2010. Riniolo spearheaded the concept of “Shine Gold” last year to heighten visibility in Western New York and several community organizations galvanized to formalize the festivities. Both the City of Buffalo and Erie county issued proclamations declaring September as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

On the national level, President Obama also issued a Presidential Proclamation last year to re-dedicate the country’s efforts to combating this devastating disease. (

The coalition of 'Shine Gold" organizations is dedicated to making pediatric cancer awareness a priority in the Western New York  community through this annual event.
